Don't Panic

It has been thirty years since a cyclone came this far South. Cyclones thrive on warm, moist air over ocean waters. When they move over cooler waters or onto land, they lose the heat and moisture that power them. Without this energy, the cyclone weakens, its winds die down, and it eventually dissipates. Landfall is especially tough on a cyclone because of the lack of warm water to fuel it.

The Darwin vs Freud debate has not been buzzing in my head since arriving in Australia. However I sought to draw a line under it and I asked Co-Pilot: 'If Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud had a conversation what would they say'? I received a long reply which I need to summarise. I imagine they would find common ground on humanity's animalistic roots and the idea that our behaviours are deeply influenced by primal instincts. But Freud's focus on the subconscious and individual psychology could clash with Darwin's broader, population-level view of change over generations. Ahha! This explains why I was driven to be almost first into the supermercado this morning to bag some brown bread.

Yummy toast for breakfast! We ventured forth into the heat of the late morning for a walk across the river to the South Bank. It is a beautiful area, not like the typical areas under flyovers at all. There are surprises everywhere of different things. It is especially good to see how a city can have pride in itself with the citizens respecting each other and the amenities they have been given. One area right in the middle, is a swimming pool which also has a beach area, it is called the lagoon. Lucky for me as I thought I would never be able to write how I was bothered by a Bluebottle at the lagoonshow. And I still can't because the show's been cancelled. I saw a man in a suit and realised this had not happened for almost six weeks.

Ended up talking to several random personages as we wandered around what I can only describe as a ghost town. Rather unfortunately came upon a display of photographs showing the history of flooding in Brisbane. Drawings from 19th century and photographs from the recent ones. It seems it does not take a direct hit here to make flooding. Other cyclones further North have caused a lot of trouble here in the past.

This sculpture 'Looking Up' caught both our imaginations and research shows it was in Rockefeller Plaza for some time before here. Originally fashioned by the artist from aluminium foil roasting trays, then cast in stainless steel, the trademarks and instructions for heating embossed in the foil can be seen at every point on the work.

I thought he said, “that if the world was going to end we were meant to lie down or put a paper bag over our head or something.” “Will that help?”, “No” Said Ford with a smile. But I thought I would give it a try. I also bumped into (literally) a like minded soul, we exchanged murderous metaphors.

Nepalese temple on high alert.

Daejeon & Brisbane Friendship Stone commemorates the 10th anniversary of the signing of the sister city agreement between Daejeon Metropolitan City in the Republic of Korea and Brisbane. Today the acrostic is an anagram. Clue; a 2003 film Inspired by Agatha Christie's 1939 'And Then There Were None'. But is it appropriate?
