Best dark sky viewing last night with a new Moon (about to be landed on). Milky Way clearly seen. To get to the best bit of beach we have to wade knee deep through the river that goes through the rain forest and past our rooms. This brown tropical water is extremely uninviting near us and yet, once entering the sandy beach area, where we must cross, becomes a clear and warm treat.
Lucky us to see a couple of Iguanas on our way to the beach. They stayed still until we scampered away. Big blighters.
Up with the lark again ready for our road trip, starting back to the Italian shop for more curry kits, so good was the one last night. Our first stop was the iconic Brushgrove Hotel. This building remains unchanged since 1868. It is situated on an island of about 8o sq kms at the apex where the Clarence river splits with the Southern Branch. A bridge leads straight to it. The only other bridge is at the other end of the island. Inside the bar, 10:30 the beer is flowing and the racing is on the big screen. A machine in the corner takes bets on the racing. There is a large semi open restaurant area indicating sometimes they could be busy. The food is recommended. Outside the garden area leads down to the jetty.
Eagerly we continue on the Pacific Highway, Mazzy (Mozzy bad idea, not nice) on 110 cruise control, nothing else on the road. And so we reach Byron Bay in good time. A town founded in 1888 with a trading connection to Sydney by sea. Those days passed, leaving one steam packet wrecked on the long and beautiful beach.
Guess what the most Easterly point of Australia is. Yes right here on our doorstep. We are in the heart of town, and our parking spot is in Aldi's car park. The place is the opposite of Lytham. People here are predominantly young! The whole town has a youthful vibe. The sign when you drive in says 'Cheer up, Slow Down, Chill Out' channelling Timothy Leary I suspect.
Heading for the beach we encounter wave after wave of girls and boys getting ready for a Saturday night in the pub. Wearing not much, making it like Blackpool.
Once again, the working population appears to all be swifties. Should TS ever do a gig in one of the towns, it would grind to a halt for lack of workers.
Spent yesterday evening watching S3E1 of 'White Lotus' and it is looking very promising.
The surf here is not great but people are getting up nicely in the restricted area that has good breakers. The waves crash on the beach and come far in, before draining back. At certain times, a reflection is created.
