Once I had jiggled Mozzy out of the deep gravel I had parked on we loaded Scott and Virgil onboard and set off on a short journey to Coffs Harbour. But we did break the journey at Nambucca Heads, a remarkably picturesque river and sea situation with a very large all day breakfast we shared. Fennel seeds being the secret ingredient in the chutney.
Another fantastic apartment was waiting for us at this beach club hotel. Once again we have a veranda that leads to a great swimming pool. This has a big fake rock waterfall with a hot tub behind it. Very nice to exit the hot tub over the wall through the waterfall into the pool.
Streams criss cross this large estate. Walking around is very like the canopy walk we did. That is to say, the houses and pools have been built right in the rain forest at the edge of the beach. Our mowed grass garden area ends with a tended hedgerow then, after that it is rain forest.
I had to research the small round nodules of sand that lay everywhere on the beach we were walking across. They are made by Sand Bubbler crabs. SBCs live in burrows in the sand, where they remain during high tide. When the tide is out, they emerge on to the surface of the sand, and pass the sand through their mouthparts, eating detritus and plankton, discarding the processed sand as pellets, which cover the beach. In each burrow, the crab waits out the high tide in a bubble of air.
Sunny again today, very hot in its direct gaze. The sea and the pools are very helpful to keep cool of course. Our apartment is in a shady nook and has a strong air-con doing a great job. We have struggled to find 'things to do' here. The Big Banana Fun Park is here but we think it is aimed at youngsters. There are walks along the coast and up to vantage points, we will do one or two, but otherwise, blank. Simply relax here and eat well.
