Various things today, starting with an Escape Room which turned out to be World class. The theme was that Van Gough had lost his inspiration, everything in his life was grey. We had to find the colours and rehabilitate his creativity. There were so many new ideas all fitting into the theme, it was brilliant and added to that we escaped in 55 mins.

I was surprised to find a statue of Robert Falcon Scott here sculptured by his widow. It commemorates the polar explorations and details how NZ was and continues to be a base for the South Pole. The story of his expedition is a long and harrowing one but the inscription on the base of the statue is a quote from him about honour and doing the right things. We did not know that we were about to hear many more stories along those lines at our next and most important stop in this city.

That was the exhibition named 'Quake City'. With many interactive pieces and photographs as well as objects including the spire from the Cathedral, it is an enthralling exhibition. However the main thrust comes from a cinema showing interviews from those who lived through the earthquakes and those who came to help. Truly a remarkable idea, one that gives a glimpse into the moments these people went through. It was riveting.

All sorts of events were described, some terribly tragic and some inspiring but all told with strength. And the young man who checked us in, also had a story. Yes today we stopped and talked to a lot of people for longer than necessary, along the way. The Earthquake is fresh in everyone's minds.

Borrowed this photo of the Cathedral in the days shortly after it collapsed.

Revived with another falafel salad bowl, we hit the Art Gallery and WOW it is simply superb. We continued to chat to other people, including the guards who were all keen to chat and explain about some of the works they have. The building is a masterpiece in itself. Like almost all new buildings here, extensively using glass.

Exciting to be here feeling the ground under our feet although it seems to be a tranquil city. Many resting places, many green spaces and many open spaces. I have the idea they want to keep it like that while rebuilding.

Very few hours left in NZ now. Some activity is going on in the packing department run by Liz. I should probably turn my attention to my bit of it.

Identification is one facet of that, Scott and Virgil are ready for our flight and are checked in.

Sunset on part one of our holiday!
