Putting our best feet forward we found the motherload and escaped a very well made escape room before lunch! So good it was that we returned to solve a murder at the Charles Hotel before dinner. But inbetwixt those epic escapes, a trip to Glenorchy was taken. Much of Lord Of The Rings was filmed there.
Along the very wonderful lakeside road we followed Gollum. Yes we did. Car plates here are anything you like.
Road to Glenorchy from Queenstown is 43k of winding hilly beauty. The town is medium in size and has a general store. The wares are set out beautifully in regimented sections and this photo shows almost the entire stock. There is no loyalty card scheme here only elevated prices. And why not, I mean it has to be brought here doesn't it?
Only option for the residents is that drive to the big supermarcardo and I expect they do it on a weekly basis. The only people working here are teenage girls. The town is somewhat overtaken by walking trails, I feel there is resentment afoot. It is worth the visit but take your own lunch and coffee.
Car parking bonanza at the lakeside, right by the hour long walks around the lagoon. We set out, Alps on our left across a broad fast river. Walking on the well made path we do enter a wilderness.
Hundreds of Nursery Spider webs built on the top of thistles, grass, and other greenery. Each nest slightly modified accordingly. Soon the ground either side of the path becomes boggy and then we have to use a doogy elevated path that takes 20 mins. to cover. Brown water alternates between stagnating and running beneath us. Large lakes there are, some with Black Swans, others have Ducks.
It is often the case, on these walks, you do not see a soul for a while, then someone or a party comes towards you. A smile costs nothing, you may say 'hello' or something like that. But occasionally I like to be a bit naughty. A couple come towards me, I size them up, yes, I am going for it. We close and who will fire the first salvo? It must be me, I see the whites of their eyes and let them have it:
'Arf-er-noon there, it reeet good int it me ol china, can't ang abooot see ya lader.'
Lakeside stop, no reason. Clear cool water, many bathers.
