Kaikoura

Made a hard call today, decided to forego our planned Dolphin watching trip. They messaged us saying it could be rough conditions and it actually was also cold and damp at our departure time. The others went because they were going to jump in and swim with the Dolphins. But things turned out well for us and we had a great day today. We tried to find the start of a forest walk driving inland, but we didn't. However we did have a good drive through the forest and found the start of a 3 day walk up the mountain.

This town is the centre for Dolphin watching, Albatross encounters, Penguin perceiving and the one we went for, Wheel watching. Liz found a pair of fully grown adults on the High Street. Wheels pair for life. Later they gracefully moved off lazily turning this way and that.

Found by Liz on one of her 'explorations', across the road, a sign saying 'path closed - South Bay forest Harvest' and of course we followed it further. There is a strong smell of Pine and tangled wood everywhere. Desolation, not to be replanted, they seek ideas about how to use the land in the future. We then checked back to Liz's pet Nursery Web Spider nest in the grounds. This beautiful gossamer balloon is unattended by day, the young are inside, we see them moving.

Yes, another installation today in which I have branched out to make a triptych. Here the connections between the Earth, Water and Sky represent a terse ambiguity as the weaknesses of its construction are in itself its own strength. Everyday life continued around it, unchanged. Made from Dead wood and the Pacific Ocean it is entitled 'Agincourt For Obvious Reasons', for obvious reasons.

Fifteen is a challenging hole on this charming course in the grounds of a home brewery run by charming people. The course is lined with white house bricks, a charming feature allowing accurate shots bounced off the wall. They also have an escape room which we played and we escaped in good time. It is built in a container! but it still boasts a hidden room and several moving parts. Not World class, but a fantastic and lovingly made room with a feature we never saw before. Putting an old coffee cup on a wooden desk, in the exact spot it had been placed many times before, evidenced by the heat rings burnt into the varnish.

Fairways is a great place to stay, the apartments are light and modern, breakfast is complementary and served in the room and it was amazing, fruit, bread, yougies, and the best ever muesli.

End of a relaxed day, stir fry beef kit from supermarkardoland. No rush tomorrow, but many miles ahead in the car tomorrow. Having the car for this long is a treat which makes packing / unpacking and shopping so much easier. The heads up display working now, driving has never been easier.
