Lovely apartment to wake up in with the Northerly beach view from third floor of the Castle Hotel. We drive into town and follow our downloaded tour of the Art Deco buildings. You are hard pressed to find a building that has no upper facade in the style. Above all the shops, the Art Deco facade is carefully painted, usually in individual colours. Our tour gives details of over forty different ones. Some of the interiors, such as the Freemasons Hall and The Tennyson, retain their Art Deco luxury style and ornamentation.
Almost an anniversary as today is 1st Feb. The Earthquake occurred at 10:47 am on 3 February, devastating the Hawke's Bay region. It lasted two and a half minutes and had a magnitude of 7.8. There were 525 aftershocks recorded in the following two weeks, with 597 being recorded by the end of February. Certain features that existed on the buildings before the Earthquake, such as lintels and balconies have been omitted as it was the collapse of these that killed so many. Today is 1st February.
Ziggurat style Art Deco (pyramid shape) used on the Hawkes Bay Chambers building, is just one of many styles that feature streamlines, straight lines, bold shapes and metallic surfaces reflecting the industrial period and the new period of modernity. Decorative elements add a sense of glamour and opulence to various artistic and design forms.
Yacht racing outside the apartment. Such skill as the Lasers tangle with each other and vie for position at the next mark. There is even a kiddies school with very small single seat sail boats on the water today. Beach Volleyball and BBQs all happening. Lifesaving school out there too. Fast motor fishing boats skim across the bay, their wake arrives at the beach a couple of minutes after they pass. Grinding more stones.
Didn't find the Faraday Museum but did find Marewa Croquet Club. The locals were most generous and stopped what they were doing to play us. We both had a full game of Advanced in under an hour. This is a six lawn club with very good lawns set in a secluded section of a public sports ground area. Nice!
Answer: 'Three' then what was the question? The question dear reader was - how many hole in ones did we get today on the Napier Mini Golf? Napier has two 18 hole courses to choose from. One is undulating fairways and basically putting, the other a more tricky obstacle ridden and difficult pin position course.
Yet to experience the forecast rain for this evening, although my seaweed oracle diviner app has an update pending. Whatever happens it seems to remain warm, and that is nice. Tomorrow we embark on a 325 Km road trip to Wellington, minimum 4 hours. We will look for some stops on the way and share the driving. It seems we simply follow one road all the way. Remarkable!
